Startup India Registration – DPIIT Recognition

What is Startup India registration?

Startup India registration is the official recognition of your business as a “startup” by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Recognition is free from the government and is the gateway to most central and state startup benefits.

Eligibility for DPIIT recognition

  • The entity is a Private Limited Company, LLP or registered partnership firm.
  • It is not more than 10 years old from the date of incorporation or registration.
  • Its turnover has not exceeded ₹100 crore in any financial year since incorporation.
  • It is working towards innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or has a scalable business model with high potential for employment generation or wealth creation.
  • It has not been formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.

Benefits of Startup India recognition

  • Income tax holiday: eligible companies and LLPs can apply for a 3-year tax exemption under Section 80-IAC.
  • IPR benefits: up to 80% rebate on patent fees, 50% rebate on trademark fees and fast-tracked patent examination.
  • Public procurement: relaxation of prior experience and turnover criteria and exemption from earnest money deposit in many government tenders.
  • Self-certification under specified labour and environmental laws.
  • Funding access: eligibility for the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme, Fund of Funds and the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups.
  • Easier exit: faster winding up for eligible startups under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
  • Access to state startup policies, incubators, mentorship and networking programmes.

Why applications get rejected

The most common reason is a weak or generic description of innovation. DPIIT expects a clear explanation of the problem you solve, how your solution is new or better, and how it can scale. Our team drafts this write-up with you and supports you through any clarifications.
