A marriage certificate is the official proof of marriage. It is needed for passports and visas, changing your name, bank and insurance nominations, and protects the rights of both spouses.
| Act | Applies to | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 | Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs whose marriage has already been solemnised | Application with proofs; both spouses and witnesses appear before the Registrar |
| Special Marriage Act, 1954 | Any couple, including inter-faith marriages | 30-day public notice, then solemnisation and registration before the Marriage Officer with three witnesses |
Several states also have their own compulsory marriage registration rules, which we follow for your location.
The bride must be at least 18 and the groom at least 21, neither may have a living spouse, and both must be capable of giving valid consent.
We identify the right Act and office, prepare the application, affidavits and document set, and plan the Registrar appointment so the visit goes smoothly. Changing your surname after marriage? See name change gazette and affidavit drafting.
